On the 25 May 2011, the UK introduced the EU amendments to the ‘Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive’. This means a change in the law regarding the way in which your site uses cookies, so that websites must now seek permission from their users before they can use this type of technology.

UK Companies were then given a one year grace period to become compliant with these changes. Therefore, the deadline for making your website cookie law compliant is the 25th May 2012. After this date, you could face a fine of up to £500,000 – a massive increase from the previous maximum fine of just £5000.

So, what are cookies?

> Cookies are small files which are placed on your equipment, including computers, laptops and mobile devices.

> They are designed for storing and collection information and are used for a variety of purposes, from analytics to advertising. However, in some cases the use of cookies is essential, such as for remembering the items that a user has placed in a shopping basket.

> This is why cookies themselves have not been made illegal – but users must now be more fully informed about what cookies are are being used and exactly how their activities are being monitored.

How can I make sure my site is legal?

The new regulations have left many people confused, with many major companies still remaining mysterious about how they intend to update their websites. However, as the deadline creeps ever closer, ignoring the problem just isn’t an option: as the official ICO guidance states, ‘This isn’t going away. It’s the law.’

If you need more information and help on making sure your website is compliant with the EU Cookie legislation by the upcoming deadline, get in contact with our team at the Energy Cell as soon as possible!

Etsy is the world’s handmade marketplace. Our mission is to empower people to change the way the global economy works. We see a world in which very-very small businesses have much-much more sway in shaping the economy, local living economies are thriving everywhere, and people value authorship and provenance as much as price and convenience. We are bringing heart to commerce and making the world more fair, more sustainable, and more fun.’

Etsy - Energy Cell Website of the Week

Etsy.com is a fun and quirky international site where individual sellers can market handmade and vintage goods and arts and crafts supplies, in an online community of ‘artists, creators, collectors, thinkers and doers’. There is an extremely diverse range of products available to purchase: from candles, to handbags, to unique furniture and even pet accessories.

To add to the experience of Etsy as a ‘community marketplace’, the site allows you to create a user account, add a profile and then select items for your ‘Favorites’ to create a catalogue of the products you love. You can also create ‘Circles’ of other users whose tastes you are interested in; if you aren’t sure who to add, you can take the ‘Taste Test’ and Etsy will recommend other users for you!

Each seller also has an individual profile, so in many cases you can see exactly who has made the products and where – users are also able to message sellers to ask any questions they may have about their products. Etsy is also available to download as an application for the iPhone or Android, so you can browse on the go!

So, for an online experience of exploring a craft fair or market without leaving the comfort your home, to find your loved ones that perfect one-of-a-kind gift, or simply to brighten up a rainy day – have a browse around Etsy.com!

Business is all about communication: regardless of the position you hold within an organisation, written communication in its various forms is both unavoidable and essential for effectively interacting with your own colleagues and the outside world. It is easy to overlook just how much written communication is produced on a daily basis: from internal correspondences, including presentations, memos, e-mails and reports, through to forms, corporate literature, advertisements, blogs and of course – your company website.

The difference that effective writing skills can make to your business can be significant. These various channels of communication all reflect on your company image, so applying an attitude of perfectionism to your spelling and grammar suggests that you maintain these high standards across the board. Well-presented information which is clear, concise and strongly persuasive can give your company the edge over your competition: if your writing exudes confidence, your potential clients are more likely to place confidence in you and your business. Furthermore, good internal communication can also improve your company’s productivity: when there are fewer misunderstandings, time is used more efficiently and relationships between co-workers are strengthened.

Some simple tips to consider when producing any piece of written communication are:

Spellcheckers – do not make the mistake of relying solely on spellchecking tools to correct your errors: they are not an adequate replacement for proof-reading! For example, they are not able to identify the difference between homonyms, such as ‘their’, ‘they’re’ and ‘there’ or typing errors which create another correct word – like ‘two’ and ‘tow’. Simple errors like this could be the difference between someone choosing whether or not to use your business!

Structural flow – there should always be an even and logical flow to the structure of sentences and paragraphs within any written piece. With any important piece of writing – such as sales pitches, proposals or important presentations – create a plan or skeleton structure before you start to keep you on track. Again, proof-reading is key – ask someone else to read over it for mistakes and then briefly summarise what they have read: if they struggle to remember or are getting things wrong, your written piece needs more work.

Edit, edit, edit – once you think you are happy with your text, try and reduce it even more. From a productivity aspect, it is good practice to always try and say things as concisely as possible. In addition, users tend to skim read content on Internet pages, so you should make sure that the most important information stands out, both through formatting and by keeping your word count as low as possible.

Language – this should be appropriate and in keeping with your brand – always consider the level of formality and technicality you should adopt when corresponding with individual contacts or clients. Your language should be kept as simple and understandable as possible – attempting to use complicated words is more likely to confuse than impress your reader and you run the risk of using terms in the wrong context.

However, unless you have someone in your company with impeccable writing skills and strong creative talent, when it comes to creating important written pieces for your website or other company literature it is well worth investing in professional services, to help make sure your copy and website content delivers the necessary messages efficiently and effectively. Brianplant - Energy Cell Web Design

Our latest site has gone live! Brianplant is a local environmental services business based in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, offering a range of services from plant hire, skip hire, haulage and recycling. Brianplant commissioned the Energy Cell to create a brand new website to replace their existing one, which would position their company as a premier company in their field of expertise. They needed a new site to provide their customers with additional content to reflect all of the services they provide, inform about the company’s involvement with local community and for users to be able to easily and swiftly find the information and contact details they may be looking for.

The Energy Cell are proud to work with businesses in the local community – we provide the same high quality and high standards of work to companies both locally and globally: from small tasks to large scale projects, we take pride in creating strong, long-term relationships with every one of our clients.
