Redesigning Lincoln Castle's Identity to Drive Tourism Growth
Energy Cell was commissioned to create a strategic visual identity and marketing campaign for the 2015 revamp of Lincoln Castle, a significant £22 million restoration project that transformed the historic landmark.
Lincoln Castle needed a cohesive visual approach to complement its major renovation and relaunch in 2015. The goal was to increase visitor numbers, enhance engagement with historical elements, and create a distinctive identity that honored the castle’s heritage while introducing modern visitor experiences.
Strategic Approach
Our team worked closely with Lincoln Castle stakeholders to understand the historical significance of the site and the key features of the renovation. We developed a visual strategy that would effectively communicate the castle’s unique selling points, including the Victorian Prison, Medieval Wall Walk, and the purpose-built vault housing one of only four surviving original copies of Magna Carta.
Visual Identity Development
We built Lincoln Castle’s new look around what makes it special – its rich history and impressive stonework. Our team created a visual style that feels both historic and modern at the same time. We chose colours inspired by the castle’s natural stone and the Lincoln landscape, paired with fonts that hint at medieval times while remaining easy to read. The graphics we designed work well on everything from web pages to social media to printed guides and signs around the castle. We took photos that showcase the castle’s best architectural details from interesting angles, and created illustrations that make historical information more engaging. All these elements come together in a consistent style that visitors recognise across their entire experience – from first seeing an advert to exploring the castle grounds.
Creating Awareness
We designed visually attractive posters, displayed throughout Lincoln Castle grounds, to catch the public’s attention with their distinctive style and advertise the events and activities. Meanwhile, our targeted social media campaign reached new audiences, with castle-related hashtags trending locally during key launch events. The visual identity proved flexible across all platforms – from Facebook cover images and Instagram stories to traditionally printed guidebooks and on-site interpretation panels.

Our work delivered significant increases in social media engagement while enhancing visitor experience ratings and extending dwell time throughout Lincoln Castle. The project improved engagement with historical exhibits and the Magna Carta, generating greater awareness of Lincoln Castle as a premier heritage destination.
